Building Sustainable Communities Symposium - St Laurence’s College, Brisbane
On 10th May 2018, St Laurence’s College, Brisbane, hosted the Building Sustainable Communities Symposium. Initiated by Etaoin Donovan, Director of Service Learning at St Laurence’s, the symposium brought together Catholic schools from across Queensland, along with representatives from the EREA Sustainability Committee. Students were given the opportunity to expand their awareness of cutting edge ecological concepts and practices before collaborating together to brainstorm possible responses that could be implemented in their communities. Students will return for the second day of the symposium in November where they will have the opportunity to share insights and reflections about what they learnt from their attempts to enact their ideas from the May symposium.
Participating schools included St Joseph’s Gregory Terrace, St Patrick’s Shorncliffe, St Joseph’s Nudgee College, Ambrose Treacy College, Ignatius Park, Townsville, St Laurence’s College, Brisbane, St Edmund’s College, Ipswich, Iona College, Brisbane and Loreto College, Brisbane.
We acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples of Australia as the traditional owners and custodians of the land of our schools. We are inspired and nurtured by their wisdom, spirituality and experience. We commit ourselves to actively
work alongside them for reconciliation and justice. We pay our respects to the Elders; past, present and future. As we take our next step we remember the first footsteps taken on this sacred land.
