Many stories have been handed down about the founder of the Christian Brothers, Blessed Edmund Ignatius Rice: born in Callan in 1762, he established his first school in Waterford in 1802 and died there in 1844. These stories help to shape our identity as women and men who follow in Edmund's footsteps. They reveal what is important to us and open a window on the Gospel of Jesus. Edmund's story is told today in the world of those who have followed in his footsteps throughout the world.
Arriving in India in 1848, the Christian Brothers have established themselves within a culturally and spiritually diverse society. Their work has flourished through traditional forms of education and more recently through community development and advocacy projects. The character of this work is formed through an emerging spirituality influenced by an awareness of the integral nature of creation which impacts us all but the poor most particularly.
All stories are true: some actually happened. All stories are about truth. All stories have the power to transform and to convert.
