Governance of Edmund Rice Education Australia

Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA) was established to succeed, carry on and expand the education ministries conducted by the Congregation of Christian Brothers in Australia. The purpose of EREA is to own, govern, manage and conduct these ministries in fulfilment of the mission of Jesus Christ in the Catholic tradition and in continuation of the charism of Blessed Edmund Rice.

EREA Council

The members of the Council of EREA are the governing body of EREA under canon law and they are also the members of the body corporate known as Trustees of Edmund Rice Education Australia under civil law. The members of the EREA Council are appointed by the Congregation Leader of the Christian Brothers. The EREA Council appoints the EREA Board and delegates to it certain responsibilities related to the management and strategic direction of EREA.

EREA Board

The EREA Board is appointed by the EREA Council. The EREA Board: Sets the strategic directions for EREA; Sets the operational policy framework of EREA; Oversees the financial well-being of EREA and each of the schools; Oversees the management of EREA; Contributes to the nurturing of key external relationships; Provides opportunities for formation in the mission of the Catholic Church and the charism of Edmund Rice; Supports and guides the Executive.

Stewardship & Resources Committee

The SRC ensures that the EREA Board is kept appraised of all matters financial relating to the operations of EREA. The SRC takes cognisance of all financial statutory and reporting requirements together with the adoption of best practice procedures and policies.

Governance and Risk Committee

Chair: Fleur Hannen

The purpose of the EREA Board Governance and Risk Committee is to monitor the statutory and regulatory compliance environment within which all EREA entities operate, to ensure compliance with its legislative and policy obligations, and to exercise due care, diligence and skill in relation to the EREA’s risk framework, risk treatment and monitoring.

Sustainability Committee

Inspired by the call of Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato si’: On Care for Our Common Home, the EREA Sustainability Committee has been established by the EREA Board to ensure fidelity to the purpose of the Sustainability at EREA initiative.

Executive Leadership

The EREA Executive Director provides day to day leadership and management of the operation of all EREA schools. The Executive Director implements the strategy and policy approved by the EREA Board, articulates the Vision and Mission of EREA and provides leadership which empowers others to bring the EREA Charter to life.

The Executive Director appoints staff to fulfil the leadership, management and operational structures of EREA and ensures the provision of appropriate faith formation and spiritual development of all staff. The Executive Director ensures the sustainability, growth and development of EREA while complying with statutory obligations.

EREA National Executive

Current members are Dr Wayne Tinsey (Executive Director), Mr Peter Leuenberger (Deputy Executive Director), Mr Ray Paxton (National Director Identity and Liberating Education) and Mr Geoff Doyle (National Director Stewardship and Resources).

EREA Leadership Team

Advisory group to the Executive Director on matters of strategic intent.

Current members are Dr Wayne Tinsey (Executive Director), Mr Peter Leuenberger (Deputy Executive Director), Mr Ray Paxton (National Director Identity and Liberating Education), Mr Geoff Doyle (National Director Stewardship and Resources), Mr Peter Chapman (Regional Director – Northern), Mr Shaun Kenny (Regional Director – Western), Mr Paul Williams (Regional Director – Southern), Mr Chris Smith (Chair Youth+) and Ms Catherine Greenley (Director - Governance and Strategic Engagement).

Mission Service Teams
EREA operates through three mission service teams: Identity and Liberating Education; School Support; and Stewardship and Resources. Each is under the leadership of a National Director. EREA supports local school communities through each Regional Director in Brisbane (QLD schools), Sydney (NSW and ACT schools), Perth (SA, WA and NT schools), Melbourne (Victoria and Tasmania schools) and for Youth+ through the Chair Youth+.
The Executive Director delegates the day-to-day operation of EREA schools to Principals and certain other responsibilities to School Boards. These responsibilities are described in ‘The Design’.
