EChO across EREA – The Journey so Far

The Beginning - EChO across EREA Pilot (Southern Region) - Term 4 2018 to Term 1 2019
Keen to offer a place where educators and EREA staff could come together to support the  integration of ecological perspectives and practices into education, EREA initiated the EChO across EREA initiative. Designed to bring parts of the national community together, we piloted the initiative by bringing together a group of Ecological Educators from schools in Melbourne, the EREA Executive and the EREA Sustainability Committee.

The Ecological Educators met three times between Term 4 2018 and Term 1 2019 (29 November, February 2019  and April 2019).

Another Step: The EChO across EREA Community of Practice (CoP) – Northern Region Term 3 and 4 2019
The Echo across EREA Northern Region CoP met three times across Term 3 and 4. As well as engaging with experts in the field, the group became a critical 'thinktank', as they workshopped and developed tools of engagement for the Integral Ecology Project.

What have you done in these communities of practice?
We have spent time exploring the following questions...
What is the vision EREA holds for ecological sustainability?  
How do we integrate Laudato si’ and Integral Ecology into our schools?
What is working, what are the challenges, what support is needed, what could we co-create?


We have partnered with the Institute for Environmental-Economic Accounting (IDEEA) who have introduced us to the SEEA framework and how it can support the embedding of ecology across the whole school.

What are the Next Steps?

Integral Ecology Project 2020-2014

As part of the soon to be announced Strategic Directions for 2020-2024, EREA is committed to enabling an ecological paradigm shift. To support this transformation, we will be leading an Integral Ecology Project (IEP) to run across the life span of this strategic directions cycle. The first phase of the IEP will focus on engaging a variety of groups across the national EREA community throughout 2020.A critical group to engage will be the EChO across EREA Communities of Practice.

We are looking for expressions of interest from educators in the Eastern Region (Term 1, 2020) and the Western Region (Term 2 in WA and Term 3 in SA) who are interested in being a part of an EChO across EREA Community of Practice.

What’s involved in being a part of an EChO across EREA Community of Practice?

  • 3 face to face meetings with other educators interspersed with research and reflective learning activities
  • Sharing your insights and perspectives to help EREA better understand how we can work together to support an ecological shift
  • Practicing new ways of thinking and being that can support and enable an ecological paradigm shift.
  • Engagement with insights from thought leaders in the fields of sustainability, ecological justice, eco-theology and spirituality.

Outcomes we aim for:

Build capacity of educators to support an ecological shift within their school community

Deepen an awareness of integral ecology and the implications it holds for the education we seek to provide

Create a community of practice within the region that can sustain itself and link to other communities of practice across the wider EREA national community.
