Dear Friends and Colleagues
Tonight at St Stephen’s Cathedral, Brisbane, St James College will celebrate 150 years of offering a quality and innovative Catholic education to thousands of young people.
I join with you all in Edmund Rice Education in congratulating Gerry Crooks and the staff, students and community of St James on this magnificent achievement.
St James is our oldest school, begun in 1868 by Catholic lay teachers and led by the Christian Brothers from 1893. It is also one of the three original schools in Queensland and one of the oldest in the Edmund Rice Movement globally. The history of St James is a wonderful story of determination, compassion and innovation. It is well worth a read.
Throughout these 150 years, St James has continuously read the “signs of the times” and responded to the educational needs of a diverse community of students and families. It has a unique and special character and today continues its deep commitment to the Charism in who and how it educates.
